Former New Zealand fast bowler Neil Wagner will return to Durham for the final four months of the 2025 season, with his first appearance scheduled for their County Championship clash against Sussex on June 22.

Wagner, 39, who retired from international cricket in February 2024, is one of New Zealand’s most successful fast bowlers, having claimed 260 wickets in 64 Tests. He is well-known for his relentless left-arm pace and aggressive line of attack, and he will be looking to continue his successful career in county cricket.

The New Zealander had a brief stint with Durham last season, making a single Championship appearance against Nottinghamshire where he claimed four wickets in the first innings to help secure an innings victory. However, his time was cut short due to injury, limiting him to just three additional List A appearances. Despite the setback, Wagner has expressed his excitement about returning to the club, stating, "I am extremely excited to join Durham again! I loved and enjoyed my short time there last season, which was unfortunately shortened by injury, but I feel like I have some unfinished business."

Wagner’s return comes as a boost to Durham's fast-bowling department, which will likely be impacted by Brydon Carse’s potential inclusion in England’s Test plans this summer. With over 800 first-class wickets in more than 200 first-class appearances, Wagner’s experience and skill will provide valuable support to Durham’s bowling attack.

Director of Cricket, Marcus North, expressed his enthusiasm over Wagner’s return, stating, "We are delighted that Neil is returning to Durham this season for a large block of the summer. His left-arm pace complements our bowling attack immensely, and his record speaks for itself with over 800 first-class wickets to his name."

Wagner’s return to county cricket will mark his fifth county club, following stints with Northampton, Lancashire, Essex, and Somerset. Durham fans will be eager to see the veteran bowler in action once again as he aims to contribute to the club's County Championship success this summer.
