New Zealand's Tim Seifert has received a rare call-up to the ODI squad, replacing the injured Mark Chapman for the second ODI against Pakistan in Hamilton. Chapman sustained a grade-one hamstring tear while fielding during the first ODI in Napier and has been ruled out of the upcoming match.
Chapman, who scored a career-best 132 in the opening ODI, has flown to Auckland for rehabilitation. He is expected to rejoin the squad for the third and final ODI of the series on April 5 in Mount Maunganui, which will also mark the conclusion of New Zealand's men's international summer.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead confirmed Seifert's inclusion, highlighting his recent form in the T20I series against Pakistan, where he top-scored with 249 runs and was named Player of the Series. Despite not having a full national or domestic contract, Seifert's strong performances earned him a spot in the ODI squad.
"While it's disappointing news for Mark after a fantastic innings in Napier, we're thankful the injury is minor. We hope he'll be fit for the final match of the summer," Stead said. "Tim’s experience and recent form make him a valuable addition to the squad, providing another strong top-order batting option."
If Seifert plays, it will be his first ODI appearance in over five years, with his last match dating back to January 2019 against Sri Lanka. His brief ODI career includes just three matches, with a top score of 22.
New Zealand will look to secure a series win with a victory in the second ODI, which would mark their third ODI series victory of the 2024/25 season, following wins against Sri Lanka and in the Pakistan tri-series.
